It has been more than two months since a magnitude 7 earthquake struck Haiti, but a local pastor recently returned from a medical mission to the country.
Pastor Robert Hoffman of Valley Lutheran Church traveled to Jacmel, Haiti, where he joined a medical team that treated almost 600 Haitians over a six-day period.
Hoffman, a former emergency medical technician, worked in a medical clinic that was set up about two hours south of Port-au-Prince.
He took patients' vital signs including temperature, pulse and blood pressure. He also found out as much as he could about their family medical history before sending them to one of the three doctors and nurses at the clinic.
Because of the amount of time that had passed since the earthquake, many injuries and illnesses being treated at the clinic were not from the earthquake itself, but from the aftermath.
"We saw some older injuries from the earthquake, but for the most part we saw a lot of malnourishment and dehydration," Hoffman said.
