A Baptist church in northern Haiti has made an unprecedented gift of 20,000 gourdes ($506) to aid in the recovery from the Jan. 12 earthquake.

The gift, though small by some standards, is the equivalent of about two years' wages in the Haitian economy.

Help is still needed long after a massive earthquake claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. That's the message a Buffalo pastor is sharing with the faithful who continue to raise money for Haiti.
rose-kidnap.jpgThe 22-year-old woman, wearing a gauzy blue dress that she had changed into after her release, spoke in a whispery voice. Perhaps the worst part of the whole ordeal, she said, was the place where her kidnappers had chosen to imprison her. That they abducted her was terrifying. That they raped her, repeatedly, was too horrendous to absorb just yet.

Alongside the billions of pounds worth of aid being pumped into rebuilding Haiti, a new project aims to give Haitians control over their own cash. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has created a $10m (£7m) fund for mobile banking services in the country.

manouse-jean.jpgWith their homeland ravaged by an earthquake, more than 50,000 Haitians have applied to legally stay and work in the U.S. and immigration advocates are urging others not to miss their chance.

Pictured: Manouse Jean, of Haiti, talks to a reporter in Miami, Thursday, June 10, 2010. Jean of Miami says temporary protected status will be a relief from years of frequent relocations to elude immigration authorities after her appeal for asylum was denied. She fled Haiti's political instability in 1999.
About 1,000 Haitian orphans now living with U.S. families are so tangled in red tape that it could be years before they get legal immigration status here.

haiti-tarps-593.jpgIt's only been four months, but Haiti has already been forgotten by the news media. Unfortunately, the needs abound in that nation struck by a devastating earthquake in January, leaving thousands dead and millions homeless. Emergency relief has given way to redevelopment, which includes rebuilding schools.
