"Haitian Orphans Have Little but One Another" (front page, July 6) was a profoundly troubling article that revealed one of the critical problems plaguing the international response to the Haitian earthquake.

In the first days after the quake, organizations did all they could to save lives. But what is needed now is a plan that will enable Haitians to rebuild their own country so it can thrive in the decades to come.
This involves supporting the efforts of community leaders like the Rev. Gerald Bataille, who are already doing the heavy lifting. He and many others like him know how to help orphans; establish civil institutions that can both serve and advocate for change; and create enterprises that will put people to work.
