Nearly 500 people from area Piedmont churches came together for a unique mobile food packaging event.
The two day process is helping children is desolate countries such as Haiti receive a healthy and nutritious meal. People of all races, ages, and religions put aside their differences and joined together as one community to help those in desperate need.
Wes Ward, Pastor of Local Ministries, said that a disaster brought a chance for unity with a fellow church to be able to help those in need.
"When the Haiti earthquake took place, we thought this might be a great opportunity to bring out two churches together, not only to serve the needs of the people in Haiti, but also to come together as brothers and sisters in Christ," said Ward.
Members of Calvary Christian, a traditionally black church, joined with members of Westover--a traditionally white church. together they packed over 110,000 meals to send to Haiti. Each parcel packaged is fortified with vitamins and minerals--and contains rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and chicken flavoring. Their efforts will help feed more than 330 children for an entire year.
Scott Hahn, of New Directions International, said he has seen the process go from beginning to end, so it is especially rewarding for him.
"Personally having traveled to Haiti and many other countries, I get to see kids eat this food on the other end, I see kids literally stuff this food in their pockets to take home to their family members that haven't had a chance to eat, so for me it's very humbling to see the whole process," said Hahn.
Last year the non-profit group "feed my starving children" packed nearly 97 million meals. With the continued help of volunteers like these two churches, the group will feed millions more for years to come.
